Given that this week’s theme is “Fresh Picks,” how could we not include this newish hotel (it opened this past fall) in the Hudson Valley called Wildflower Farms? The resort, set on 140 bucolic acres in Gardiner, New York, is abloom with design ideas that one doesn’t normally see in hotels.

“We designed the project to feel like someone’s country retreat in the Hudson Valley and to take you far away from city life,” says Christie Ward, of Ward + Gray, the New York City-based studio charged with the resort’s interior design. “We looked to the Arts and Crafts movement in the area and early American homes to find inspiration for the furniture shapes and the motifs [that show up in] the custom fabrics and rugs.”

Below, she delves into the design decisions that went into creating the chic-in-the-country vibe at Wildflower.

The focal point of the Great Porch (other than the view) is the central, large fireplace. The pendant lights were custom-designed by Ward + Gray and “pulled inspiration from antiques found nearby and local to the Hudson Valley.”

Above: “We wanted to do an updated take on a quilt for the sofa upholstery, so decided to mix together different patterns and textures for the sofa cushions throughout the lobby. The rocking chairs were all found vintage at Brimfield, reupholstered with Pierre Frey and Brochier fabrics in a deep green tone to bring in the outdoors.” On the wall is a composition by Stuart Thornton, who creates art from preserved plants; this one features large-scaled Gunnera leaves.
