When interior designer Mary McCollister Finch began her full-scale redesign of this Alabama home, her client provided only one stipulation: for the interiors to be a blend of traditional and contemporary styles. Opting for more relaxed furnishings with French influence, Mary captures the gracious balance between elegance and ease that makes the French aesthetic so highly sought after, leaving us with a collection of style ideas to incorporate into our own homes.
An Artful Approach
Ensure the main gathering space feels polished and welcoming by tucking away electronics, such as a TV, when they are not in use. “The landscape over the fireplace hides a TV in the living room, but I think it’s a very nice focal point, too,” says interior designer Mary McCollister Finch. From paintings to cabinetry, the creative possibilities are endless when it comes to concealing these pieces.
Fresh Accoutrements
Bring Versailles vibes to your table with the addition of topiaries. Filled with around 700 topiary plants, the gardens at the Palace of Versailles are known for these sculpted beauties. Indoor plants are always a great addition and brighten up your home’s interiors.

With an appreciation for history, French style incorporates antique pieces, or those inspired by the past, for a look that spans the ages. “The bed is the highlight of the [primary] bedroom,” says Mary, who worked with a craftsman to create what she calls an adaptation of the Kempner bed.
