A nice set of curtains is expensive. Then, when you factor in rods, hooks, and blinds, the price to cover one window can exceed $100. Fortunately, those who need to block out light can try an alternative window covering for far less money.
These ideas are practical if you want to save up for quality curtains or cover a window quickly.
1. Apply Frosted Glass Film
Frosted glass window film obscures glass while still letting light filter in. It’s a nice, budget-friendly solution that creates privacy. The easiest to install option is frosted glass cling. It doesn’t require glue and is simple to pull off when you’re ready for a new look.
You can cover a window in this film for about $5 to $10, depending on the design and brand of the film. Find great options at Amazon, Walmart, and major home improvement retailers.
2. Cover Windows with A Tension Rod and Throw Blankets
Tension rods (like those you use for a shower) fit in between window frames without requiring nails or screws. These adjustable rods are ideal for draping a throw blanket over to block out the light.
Window tension rods cost about $7-$15. If that’s not in your budget, hammer small tack nails in the outside corners of your window frame and drape a thin throw blanket or towel over the top.
3. Prop Up a Privacy Screen
A privacy screen is a panel you can place anywhere you need extra privacy. Placed in front of a window, a privacy screen can block light and prevent passersby from seeing inside your house. You can purchase small privacy screens or build your own out of thick paper, plywood, lattice, or wood strips.
4. DIY Faux Stained Glass
Stained glass is an age-old design element that can add class and privacy to a space. While replacing your window with authentic stained glass isn’t practical, you can get the look with window film.
You can find stained glass window film in dozens of designs, so there’s sure to be an option to suit your space. Opt for cling film versus the glue-on type. Window cling film is easy to apply and take off when ready for a new look.
5. Hang Macrame or Beaded Strands
Boho and eclectic design lovers can skip the curtains and hang macrame or beaded strands.
Consider using tack nails to install large macrame hangings so that they sit across the top or middle of your windows. Alternatively, you can DIY or purchase wooden beaded strands and arrange them over the window to provide privacy.
6. Install Window Shades
Window shades are much less expensive than curtains and come in many types, including cloth, paper, and cellular. Paper shades are the least costly and roll up and down, allowing you to block the light as needed. You can even DIY a set of Roman window shades for a customized look.
7. Combine Command Hooks and Pretty Fabric
Create the perfect inexpensive window covering for your home with command hooks and your favorite fabric. Command hooks are a temporary, damage-free way to add a covering to your window — add a hook on the outside (or inside) corners of your window frame. Then, find a thin fabric, cut it to size, and drape it on the hooks.
You can find cheap fabric at Walmart. Look for bed sheets or fabric at your local thrift store for an even less expensive makeshift curtain.
