Hanging plants from the ceiling is a great way to free up space, keep them away from pets, and add a decorative touch. With just rope, hooks, a drill, and a wooden bowl, you can easily create a stylish planter.

How to Hang Plants From the Ceiling

Materials:

  • Wooden bowl (like a kitchen salad bowl)
  • Rope or cord
  • Drill
  • Drill bit (large enough to accommodate rope)
  • Plant
  • Plastic, glass, or ceramic bowl (that fits inside wooden bowl)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Hook (if not already in ceiling)

Step 1: Measure and Drill

Mark three evenly spaced holes around the bowl using a pencil. For accuracy, use a flexible measuring tape or eyeball it. Hold the bowl steady and drill holes at the marked spots, propping it against a sturdy surface if needed.

Step 2: Prepare and Knot the Rope

Measure and cut three equal-length pieces of rope, doubling the desired hanging length. Thread one piece through each hole and tie a secure overhand knot underneath to hold it in place. Ensure the loops are even for a balanced hang.

Step: 3 Secure and Hang

If you have ceiling beams, use a J-hook or hang an S-hook over the beam. For drywall, use toggle bolts, swag hooks with anchors, or adhesive hooks for lighter plants. When hanging, stagger the knots for balance and, if needed, tie them together with a single rope, looping it at the top. Adjust to keep the planter level and position it near light for healthy growth.
