First Day of Spring in the Kitchen: Let's Play House!

Happy first day of spring! As you know I’ve been “easing into spring” in my home since January haha, but the official arrival of the season is cause for celebration! We have much to be excited for this spring. With the arrival of our first grand babe a few weeks ago I feel like I’m seeing my home and every season to come through fresh eyes.

If you missed the news with our grandson’s name, I shared it here! Also thank you for all the wonderful advice and suggestions for being the best grandma I can be.

I can’t help but imagine all the fun we’ll have with the seasons and holidays now that we’ll have two little ones around (my oldest daughter is expecting a baby this summer!). Grammy camps will definitely be happening at my house! I can’t wait to create magical childhood memories in each season.

Bunnies and flowers always feel like spring to me. They make me smile! What feels like spring to you? Even if you have no little ones around, there is no reason to not add whimsy to your style if it makes you happy. Do what you love!

It’s fun to rearrange old things and combine them with new. You can see in my photos how I rearrange art and accessories all the time, you never know where something might end up!

That is how a home evolves with you! I’m never finished with a room (how boring that would be for me!).

While my goal is for backdrops to be timeless so they don’t need to change so often, I think of decorating in each season like an ongoing experiment to create a mood that speaks to our family and makes us happy.

Decorating with what you love is like playing house! You get to choose what you do, you’re just playing so have fun with it. I think it’s especially important to have fun with things that are not permanent and aren’t going to take an eye out, ya know? You have freedom to be creative in your home and do what makes you smile just for the delight of it.

If you tend to get in a style rut or paralyzed by indecision, go out on a short limb each season and try a new accessory. What’s the worst that could happen? Don’t overthink it. You might need to take a few steps in a new direction before you feel comfortable with it, but don’t let fear hold you back.

Speaking of the fun of childhood, I remember when my kids were little they each had their own fashion sense. Honestly I let them wear any combination they wanted! Sometimes I cringed inside but always smiled at their creativity! Of course we found teachable opportunities to suggest what might go well together and suggested that wearing sweaters when it’s cold is a good idea and all the things that moms and grandmas tend to speak up about ha!

But I decided that wearing things they liked and trying different combinations was how they developed their own independence, sense of style and creativity. What felt comfortable to them? They could decide that (within reason, of course). If they wore sandals instead of boots out to dinner in the rain they got wet feet. Then the next time it rained, they could try something different!

Everyone has a different way of parenting of course, but as long as my kids weren’t likely to poke an eye out or endangering their lives or others lives or making any life-altering decisions, we tried to give them freedom to enjoy creativity and learn ways to express their style. They grew up to be responsible, creative and have great taste, so any fear was unfounded :). And only my son chooses occasionally to not to wear a jacket when it’s cold hahah. It’s fine! He’s probably just not cold.

Anyway, all that to say, just like when my kids were young, one way we can be creative and even learn what it is we love is by trying new things. You can try experimenting with different colors and combinations in each season. If you don’t love it, try something else. Just remember decorating for the seasons is like playing house! It can be fun and not so serious!
