Summer and Scott Dunn’s Utah home—featured in our Autumn issue—expertly blended contemporary touches with rustic elements and vintage flair for a style coined “Modern Sundance” by Summer and designer Katie Phelon. The senior designer with Remedy Design Firm first worked with the Dunns on the remodel of their basement a year and a half earlier. “It is a walk-out basement that just goes out to the backyard, which is really nice,” Katie says. “Those are big in Utah. A walk-out basement is a must-have.”
Utilized as a hangout for teens and family, the space features a variety of entertainment options—from a pool table to a sizeable TV and comfortable sectional that offers plenty of seating for friends and family alike.
In lieu of artwork, Katie and her team used trim to create a fun yet subtle statement wall that plays well with the plaid carpet. Cool gray upholstery pairs with black-and-gold furnishings for a contemporary influence that grounds the room’s airy aesthetic.
By offering a designated area for each activity, Katie is able to make the expansive room feel cozier. A built-in banquette surrounds the pool table as it offers a secondary gathering spot on the basement’s lower level.
From serving up late-night snacks to cooking for backyard get-togethers, having a fully equipped kitchen in the basement space was essential for the Dunns who love to entertain.
An island with a waterfall edge, floating shelves, and a handmade tile backsplash make an appearance in each kitchen remodel, ensuring the two spaces—although separate—remain cohesive. Pick up a copy of our Autumn issue to tour the upstairs!
